What a packing slip does

A packing slip lets the recipient check the delivery against their order. It reduces mistakes and gives both sides a record of what was shipped.

What to include

  • Ship-from and ship-to details.
  • Order number and ship date.
  • Each item with quantity ordered and shipped.
  • Backordered items.
  • Carrier and tracking number if known.
  • Notes for the recipient.

Partial shipments

If you ship part of an order, show what is still on backorder so the recipient is not left guessing. Send a new slip with the remaining goods.

Tips

Keep it simple, check quantities before sealing the box and keep a copy with the order. This tool provides general information and is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a packing slip?

A packing slip is a document that goes in or on a shipment and lists what is inside, so the recipient can check the delivery against their order. It normally shows quantities, not prices.

What is the difference between a packing slip and an invoice?

A packing slip lists what was shipped and has no prices. An invoice asks for payment and shows prices and totals. The slip goes with the goods; the invoice usually goes by email.

Is a packing slip the same as a packing list or a delivery note?

The terms are used loosely. A packing list is often used in international shipping and may carry weights and dimensions; a delivery note is the same idea in many countries. Use the label your carrier or customer expects.

Should a packing slip show prices?

Usually not. Leaving prices off lets you ship to a third party, such as a gift recipient, without revealing what was paid. That is why this form shows quantities only.

What should a packing slip include?

Your details and the ship-from address, the recipient and ship-to address, the order number, ship date, an item list with ordered and shipped quantities, backordered items and any carrier or tracking number.

How do I handle partial shipments and backorders?

Enter the ordered quantity and the shipped quantity for each item. The form calculates the backordered quantity so the recipient knows what is still coming.

Is a packing slip a shipping label?

No. A shipping label is attached to the outside of the parcel for the carrier. The packing slip tells the recipient what is inside.

Do I need a packing slip for international shipments?

Often a carrier or customs authority will ask for a packing list together with a commercial invoice. Check the requirements for your destination country and carrier.

How do I print a packing slip?

Fill in the form, then press Print and choose your printer, or download the PDF and print it from your PDF viewer. The page is Letter size.

Who provides the packing slip?

The seller or shipper creates it and includes it with the shipment so the recipient can check the contents against their order.

Can I print this on a thermal label printer?

It is designed for a standard Letter page, not for a 4 by 6 inch thermal label. Print it on a normal printer, or use your carrier’s label tool for the shipping label.

Can I add my logo to the packing slip?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP logo and it appears on the preview, the PDF and the printout.
